As part of the academic course Building in Existing Contexts, the residential house in Höhenreute, Lindau—owned by the Pfersich family since 1907—was thoroughly restored and modernized. The aim of the project was to adapt the building to the functional and aesthetic requirements of an architecture school, without compromising its historic character.
Special attention was given to heritage preservation: all interventions were carried out in strict accordance with conservation guidelines. The existing barn was both extended and lengthened to optimize the structural framework and create additional usable space.
The ensemble was complemented by a modern annex, specifically tailored to the needs of students. This new building section rests on a base of dark-tinted concrete, creating a clear design contrast between the historic structure and contemporary architecture.
The façade design reflects the materiality of the surrounding area: the residential house was clad in traditional wooden shingles, while the barn received a modern shell of vertical wooden slats. To improve the building’s energy efficiency while preserving its historic substance, targeted measures were implemented—such as integrating modern insulation techniques and carefully renewing the windows.
